Childhood Friends Use Bobcat Equipment to Become Landscaping Pros

Published on November 15, 2024

  • Anthony Heathco and Colton Roush are childhood friends who started Roadkill Lawncare & Landscaping together in their hometown of Grand Junction, Colorado.
  • They started learning the ropes at 15, working for other landscaping businesses pulling weeds.
  • After realizing the extra challenges of renting equipment, they began by purchasing a Bobcat® MT100.
  • They’ve recently added a ZS4000 mower and T64 compact track loader to their growing fleet.

For Anthony Heathco and Colton Roush, a journey of friendship and business started long before they ever thought about running a landscaping company. Growing up as neighbors in Grand Junction, Colorado, the two met in kindergarten and have been best friends ever since.

Throughout high school, Anthony and Colton both worked similar jobs in the landscaping field, spending long days pulling weeds and pushing lawn mowers for $10 an hour. In those early days, they learned the ins and outs of the industry. Their friendship and shared experiences turned into a mutual passion for landscaping, and by 2018, they decided it was time to take the leap. They launched Roadkill Lawncare & Landscaping with a goal to transform barren construction lots into custom outdoor landscapes.

Starting From the Ground Up

“We started with wheelbarrows and basic hand tools,” says Anthony, admitting that things get a lot easier when you bring in heavy equipment.

Roadkill Lawncare & Landscaping specializes in new construction landscaping – creating everything from scratch. Whether it’s installing fencing, laying sod, grading land or setting up irrigation systems, their mission is to create beautiful customized landscapes for their clients. They also tackle rock work and tree planting, offering a full spectrum of services. They set themselves apart from other landscaping companies by being dedicated to perfection on every project.

“We pride ourselves on helping our customers achieve their landscaping dreams,” Colton says. “It’s exciting to wake up every morning and get to do this.”

Using Bobcat Machines to Make the Grade

In the beginning, Anthony and Colton rented Bobcat equipment for their jobs, but quickly realized that the logistics of renting – limited hours, transportation hassles and the need to return machines – was holding them back.

We knew we needed our own equipment to stay competitive and take on bigger jobs.

They made their first investment in a Bobcat MT100 mini track loader, a decision that completely transformed their business. The machine’s power helped them reduce the need for manual labor, while its compact size let them get into tight spaces like fenced-in yards. That would have been impossible with bigger equipment. It was exactly what they needed.

Since that first purchase, Roadkill Lawncare has grown even further. They invested in a ZS4000 zero-turn mower, which they say allows them to fit through yards with tight fences and also tackle big yards with efficiency. Recently, Anthony and Colton added a Bobcat T64 compact track loader to their fleet, which has allowed them to take on more serious loading and grading projects.

They supplement their fleet with rental equipment when needed, providing them with an option to take on specialty projects with ease.

Bobcat Is the Gold Standard

When asked why they keep coming back to Bobcat equipment, both Anthony and Colton are quick to point to Bobcat’s unmatched reputation.

The Bobcat name is powerful. It’s a staple in the industry, and we are proud to have a fleet of Bobcat equipment.

Beyond the name, it’s the ease of operation that keeps them loyal.

“We’ve used all kinds of machines in the past, but Bobcat is the one we rely on. You step in, hit ‘GO,’ and you’re working,” says Colton.

Looking Toward the Future

As their business continues to grow, Anthony and Colton are already planning for the future. With new construction projects constantly in the pipeline, they’re grateful to have Bobcat equipment by their side.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without Bobcat,” says Anthony.

As they look toward expanding Roadkill Lawncare, they’re confident that their fleet of Bobcat machines will help them stay ahead of the competition.
